Apr 03, 2008 - "Top Cancer News", New mechanism explains resistance of some ovarian tumors to chemotherapy A team of researchers led by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has identified a new mechanism that explains why some recurrent ovarian tumors become resistant to treatment with commonly used platinum-based chemotherapy drugs such as cisplatin and carboplatin. They describe their research online Feb. 10 in the journal Nature. While these findings are based on the study of ovarian-cancer cells from women with inherited mutations in the BRCA2 gene, they also may help explain the mechanics of cisplatin resistance in ovarian-cancer patients with BRCA1-gene mutations. Together such genetic mistakes are thought to cause about 10 percent of ovarian cancers, according to senior author Toshiyasu (Toshi) Taniguchi, M.D., Ph.D. Apr 02, 2008 - "FDL Reporter", Fond Du Lac, WI Caffeine: Friend or foe? We've all had them — those I-can't-move-a-muscle mornings. The alarm clock screams that it's time to get up, but your body says otherwise. Just opening an eye can seem like trying to move the Great Wall of China with your bare hands. But the kids, assignments and work call. If a brisk run or warm shower fail, exhausted mothers, haggard college students and early risers turn to a potent but legal substance — caffeine. Apr 01, 2008 - "Jackson Sun", Jackson, TN Art expresses feeling about cancer A woman in England sits in a chair beside a window in one painting contemplating her diagnosis of ovarian cancer. In another painting from Colombia, a lily blossom has coiled thorns as part of its stem. Apr 01, 2008 - "MedWire News", Cyclin E ovarian cancer overexpression linked to lifetime ovulatory cycles Overexpression of cyclin E in ovarian cancer patients is linked to a high number of lifetime ovulatory cycles (LOCs), largely due to oral contraceptive use and pregnancy, US researchers have discovered. Cyclin E overexpression is associated with poor cancer outcomes. Joellen Shildkraut and colleagues from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, therefore studied cyclin E expression in 538 cases of epithelial ovarian cancer and 629 controls. Apr 01, 2008 - "The Daily Gleaner", Book chronicles woman's struggle to thwart breast, ovarian cancer NEW YORK - At age 35, Jessica Queller was the kind of woman it's hard not to envy. Bright, funny and attractive, she was a TV writer with a great Hollywood gig and loads of friends. Yet one sunny morning, Queller suddenly faced an overwhelming life-or-death decision. A few months earlier, without much forethought, she'd taken a blood test for the BRCA "breast cancer gene" mutations. She was so confident she'd test negative that she skipped any genetic counselling beforehand. Bad idea.
